Veronica makes winning return from dope ban
JAMAICA’S Veronica Campbell-Brown has her eyes firmly fixed on next year’s world athletics championships in Beijing after claiming her first win at a Diamond League meet since her doping controversy in Zurich on Thursday.
Campbell-Brown won the women’s 100m in 11.04sec at the 13th in the 14-leg Diamond League series.
“My season has had highs and lows,” said former double Olympic 200m champion Campbell-Brown, who had a two year ban overturned in February.
The meet failed to produce any season’s best performances with Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt pulling out at the weekend, deciding to bring an early end to his season.
Commonwealth champion Kemar Bailey-Cole won the men’s 100m in 9.96secs to beat American Michael Rodgers.
Britain’s European champion James Dasaolu clocked 10.06 to take third ahead of Jamaican Asafa Powell and former world champion Tyson Gay, both of whom returned from drugs bans this summer, and finished fourth and eighth respectively.
World record holder and Olympic gold medalist David Rushida finished third in the 800m, behind Botswana’s Nijel Amos and Ayanleh Souleiman of Djibouti. Amos, who beat Rushida to Commonwealth gold last month, finished first in 1min 43.77sec, with Souleiman in 1:43.93, edging Rushida by three hundredths of a second.
“It has been a tough season for me,” Rushida said. “My preparation wasn’t perfect this year because I was carrying over an injury from last year. But I’m looking forward to next year.”
World champion LaShawn Merritt eased to the 400 in 44.36, ahead of fellow American Gil Roberts in 44.96.
In the women’s events, Britain broke the national record in the 4x100m relay for the second time in less than two weeks, with Asha Philip, Ashleigh Nelson, Anyika Onuora and Desiree Henry clocking 42.21.
It earned them victory ahead of Jamaica and the United States.
Dawn Harper-Nelson of the United States beat Olympic champion Sally Pearson and Britain’s European champion Tiffany Porter in the 100m hurdles.
