Chen advances to second round
FOURTH-SEEDED Chen Jin of China advanced to the men's singles second round of the world championships in Paris yesterday, beating Ville Lang of Finland 21-14, 21-14.
Chen met with some resistance from the world's 53rd ranked shuttler in the first set, but forced out a win.
When the 24-year-old Chen led the second game 11-6, Lang headed off to change his shoes. The game eventually finished with the same scoreline - 21-14 - as the first one.
"After all, it's the first match of the competition. What I was trying to do was just adjusting to the court conditions such as the light and the wind," said Chen, who finished second behind teammate Lin Dan at last year's World Championships.
Chen refused to admit that he was lucky to be drawn in the second half. Big names like Lee Chong Wei, Taufik Hidayat as well as his teammates Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai are all in the first half.
"In the men's singles, whatever the draw is, the competition is tough," Chen said. "There is still Simon Santoso and Peter Gade in my half. I have to focus on each match."
Chen will next face Kestutis Navickas of Lithuania, who rallied past Kieran Merrilees of Scotland 15-21, 21-13, 21-14. The 107th-ranked Chen Ong Zhao of Singapore caused the first upset of the day by defeating 14th-seeded Chetan Anand of India 21-14, 21-18.
Also, ninth-seeded Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand routed Vladimir Malkov of Russia 21-6, 21-6 and eighth-seeded Simon Santoso of Indonesia beat Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland 21-11, 21-17.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei has been selected to host the 2010 Super Series finals, the climax of badminton's 12-leg Super Series circuit.
Staged in Malaysia for the last two years, the finals feature the top eight-ranked players in the Super Series standings.
The last Super Series tournament of the year is in China's Hong Kong in December. The Taipei finals will be staged from January 5-9.
