China poised for clean sweep
CHINA'S Chen Jin went one better than last year to lift the men's singles world title yesterday, subduing Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat 21-13, 21-15 in the final in Paris.
Chen, 24, had finished runner-up in 2009 when he lost to compatriot Lin Dan but Lin was beaten this time round in Friday's quarterfinals, leaving center stage for Chen.
The Chinese took his chance with both hands, often outplaying Hidayat, world champion in 2005 and Olympic gold medalist in 2004.
Chen raced into a 7-0 lead in the first game and though Hidayat fought back, two errors at the end handed the advantage to the Chinese.
Defending superbly when necessary, Chen led 6-2 in the second and generally called the shots. Hidayat bravely saved three match points from 20-12 but then succumbed.
"Mentally I was very strong today. I prepared very well and I didn't let Taufik play to his strengths, particularly around the net," Chen told a media conference.
Hidayat, 29, said: "I tried my best today but made too many mistakes. I was able to get single points but not put a run together."
Hidayat had also lost to Chen in the semifinals of last year's worlds in India.
"I'm so sad I lost today," Hidayat said, "but Chen Jin is a very good player, he was powerful today."
Chen hit 18 smash winners to only six for Hidayat.
Chen's victory heralded a possible Chinese clean sweep of the five titles up for grabs yesterday. China has not achieved the feat since 1987.
China won a second crown in the women's singles when seventh seed Wang Lin upset third-seeded compatriot Wang Xin 21-11, 19-21, 21-13.
The mixed doubles title also went China's way as eighth seeds Zheng Bo and Ma Jin defeated sixth-seeded compatriots He Hanbin and Yu Yang 21-14, 21-10.
China is also assured of gold in the women's doubles when top seeds Ma Jin and Wang Xiaoli battle second ranked Du Jing and Yu Yang in the final.
In the men's doubles, fifth seeds Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng will try for a Chinese sweep when they face top seeds Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia.
On Saturday, Hidayat rolled back the years to reach the final with a 21-10, 22-20 victory over South Korean 13th seed Park Sung-hwan.
Hidayat had not hit such heights lately for a variety of reasons, on and off court.
He signalled he was back on track by disposing of world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the quarterfinals last Friday, then beat Park, a giant-killer himself after beating titleholder Lin in the last eight.
