China too strong for Indonesia

DEFENDING champion China trounced arch rival Indonesia 5-0 to top Group A of the Sudirman Cup in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, declaring it is ready to face anyone in tomorrow's quarterfinals.

The Chinese have won the biennial tournament eight times and are chasing their fifth consecutive title.

After yesterday's matches, Chinese coach Li Yongbo said his team is ready to meet anyone in the quarterfinals.

"Anyone will do. It doesn't matter. We are ready to face anyone," the 50-year-old said.

Former champion Indonesia, Denmark, Japan, South Korea, underdog Chinese Taipei and Thailand have also qualified for the quarterfinals with a last space left for either European champion Germany or host Malaysia.

The two teams were playing later.

China and Indonesia qualified for the quarterfinals by beating India 5-0 and 4-1, respectively, in their group.

The top two teams of each group move on to the quarterfinals. All group winners will be seeded when the draw for the quarterfinals takes place later.

Li also sprung to the defense of Olympic champion Li Xuerui, who surprisingly dropped a game before beating Indonesia's Aprilia Yuswandari 13-21, 21-4, 21-11.

"She is making her debut in a team event and was a little nervous," he said. "Though she took a little longer to settle down, it was one-way traffic in the next two games after dropping the first."

The Chinese coach, who was made to attend the official press conference by the Badminton World Federation after snubbing it on Monday, also lauded his other players.

"Cai (Yun) and Fu (Haifeng) were also a little slow at first, but it was understandable as this is their first competitive match since winning the Olympic gold medal in London," he said.

The world and Olympic champions were stretched to three games before beating scratch Indonesian pair Hendra Setiawan and Angga Pratama 16-21, 21-15, 21-15.

Meanwhile, Japan edged Denmark 3-2 in Group D in a thrilling encounter, which lasted more than five hours.
