Chinese women’s doubles pair back as world No. 1

China’s women’s doubles pair of Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan returned to world No. 1 in the latest world rankings released by the Badminton World Federation yesterday.

Chen and Jia returned to the top spot for the first time since August 2018, after clinching the Hong Kong Open title over the weekend. They also ended the recent reign by Japan as the top women’s doubles pairs. In women’s singles, China’s Chen Yufei, who also won in Hong Kong, rose to second place, mounting a serious challenge to Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei. In contrast to Tai, Japanese player Kento Momota maintains a comfortable lead in rankings in men’s singles, leading his closest rivals by some 30,000 points. China’s Chen Long and Shi Yuqi are ranked No. 4 and No. 7, respectively. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Lin Dan was at No. 16. China continued its dominance in mixed doubles. Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong were first followed by teammates Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping.
