Easy for China, Indonesia as Denmark stretches Malaysia
CHINA and Indonesia cruised into the semifinals of the Thomas Cup championship after convincing victories over South Korea and India, respectively, yesterday.
China's Olympic and world champion Lin Dan vanquished Park Sung-hwan 21-16, 21-15 in 54 minutes at Kuala Lumpur's Putra Stadium.
"I was more relaxed today after a tough match (against the same opponent in a group clash) yesterday," said Lin. "Both of us played very well today. However, when we are both in good form, it is I who normally do better."
China's doubles pair Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng took only 30 minutes to rout Jung Jae-sung and Shin Baek-choel 21-11, 21-16, while world No. 3 Chen Jin beat Shon Wan-ho 21-15, 21-12 for the defending champion to advance to the next stage.
China's head coach Li Yongbo was naturally pleased with his team's performance.
"The South Koreans were playing under no pressure so they could give their all to try and topple us," he said. "However, our players did very well today, both technically and mentally."
China will take on hosts Malaysia, which led by world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, held off Peter Gade-led Denmark 3-2 yesterday, in the semis.
Indonesia also beat India by a 3-0 margin, but its top shuttler, Taufik Hidayat, was stretched to three games by Kashyap Parupalli before winning 21-12, 10-21, 21-17.
His teammates had an easier time - Simon Santoso needed only 27 minutes to thrash Arvind Bhatt 21-8, 21-10, while doubles pair Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan beat Sanave Thomas and Akshay Dewalkar 21-16, 21-17.
Indonesia's opponent will be Japan, which saw off Germany 3-1.
In the women's Uber Cup quarterfinals held simultaneously, China brushed aside India 3-0 to qualify for the next round; Indonesia crushed hosts Malaysia 3-0; while Japan edged Denmark 3-1 and South Korea advanced after a 3-1 beating of Russia.
