Lee fends off Chen again, advances to Hong Kong Open semifinals
MALAYSIAN great Lee Chong Wei beat world No. 1 Chen Long for the second time in a row to secure his place in the final four of the Hong Kong Open yesterday.
The quarterfinal meeting between the long-standing rivals was something of a grudge match after Lee downed the Chinese player to take the title at the China Open in Fuzhou last week.
The former world No. 1 will now face giant-slayer Angus Ng in the semifinals.
The young Hong Konger stunned legend Lin Dan in the second round, and took down Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei 21-17, 15-21, 21-15 yesterday.
Chen — who has won seven titles this year — had the upper hand in the first game. But a late surge by Lee at the end of the second set took the marathon match into a third that went the Malaysian’s way after 85 minutes 13-21, 21-19, 21-15.
The other semifinal sees unseeded Indonesian Ginting Anthony taking on China’s Tian Houwei today.
On the women’s side, world champion Carolina Marin of Spain brushed off Thai Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-12, 21-13 to book her place in the semifinals, where she will play China’s Wang Yihan.
