Lee ousts Chen to reach maiden final at worlds
TOP seed and world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei swept aside defending champion Chen Jin of China 21-13, 21-9 in the semifinals of the world badminton championships at Wembley Arena in London yesterday.
It was a devastating performance from the Malaysian who has been at the top of his game all week and on this form looks set to land the first world title of his career in today's final. "I've prepared well for the tournament and I had to be at my best today," Lee told reporters.
Smashing and recovering well, he had too much firepower for sixth-seeded Chen in the first game and then trailed 0-4 in the second.
However, Chen could not cash in. Lee leveled at 7-7 and then sped away to book his place in a world championship final for the first time.
"I thought I was average today and he was very good," said Chen.
Lee next plays three-time former champion Lin Dan of China or Europe's top player, Peter Gade of Denmark.
In the first women's semifinal, second seed Wang Yihan beat Chinese compatriot Wang Xin 21-14, 21-15.
She next meets Germany's Juliane Schenk or Cheng Shao-chieh of Chinese Taipei, who stunned top seed Wang Shixian of China on Friday.
In the women's doubles, top seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yang Yu of China brushed aside Japanese third seeds Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna 21-8, 21-15 to reach the final where they will take on the winners of the clash between fifth-seeded compatriots Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei and the Indian pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa.
In the mixed doubles, too, China has a chance to claim the title after top seeds Zhang Nan and Zhao reached the final. The duo had won the first game of their semifinals against compatriots Xu Chen and Ma Jin 21-17 when the sixth seeds retired.
Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng are the top seeds in the men's doubles and were taking on South Koreans Jung Jae-sung and Lee Yong-dae in the semifinals later.
