Lin ousted in China Open first round

Chinese legend Lin Dan was dumped out in the first round of the China Open yesterday, stunned by Indonesia’s world No. 17 Jonatan Christie.

The 19-21, 16-21 defeat will ramp up speculation that the 34-year-old Lin, regarded as the best badminton player of all time, could call it quits as he approaches the end of his brilliant career.

Seeded third, Lin never found his rhythm in going down to Christie in 42 minutes, in a shock upset in Fuzhou City, southeast China’s Fujian Province.

Christie beat Lin at the Indonesia Open last year but had lost their previous three encounters.

Speaking after the match, Lin said that he played well in the first game but did not perform as well in the second.

“I did not grab the first game when I had the lead at 19-17 and perhaps that affected me and I was a bit frustrated,” the world No. 4 said, adding: “I made lots of mistakes in the second game while Christie played aggressively. That is the reason why I fell behind.”

The 20-year-old Christie plays Hong Kong, China’s Angus Ng next.

Lin’s rival, Malaysian Lee Chong Wei, had no such trouble in a 21-5, 21-7 demolition of Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Jen-hao.
