South Korea upsets China for Uber Cup

SOUTH Korea upset defending champion China 3-1 to win the Uber Cup women's badminton tournament for the first time yesterday.

China had previously won the biennial tournament all six times since 1998. The Koreans picked up their first point in Kuala Lumpur when Bae Seung-hee defeated world No. 1 Wang Yihan 23-21, 21-11. "Wang Yihan made some crucial mistakes and I took advantage of that," Bae said. "It's a good feeling to win the first point for my country against the Chinese." Lee Hyo-jung and Kim Min-jung then won the first doubles 18-21, 21-12, 21-15. But China fought back when Wang Xin triumphed in the second singles 21-14, 16-21, 21-7 over Sung Ji-hyun. Lee Kyung-won and Ha Jung-eun then rallied to topple Olympic champions Du Jing and Yu Yang 19-21, 21-14, 21-19 in the second doubles to seal victory.
