A's records tumble in Angels win

THE Oakland Athletics made several entries in the team record books in their 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday while strengthening their grip on an American League playoff berth.
The A's moved 22 games above a .500 winning percentage for the first time since 2006; they won their 12th consecutive road game for the first time since 1971; while rookie pitcher A.J.Griffin (6-0) became only the second Athletics pitcher in 85 years to begin his career with six straight wins.
The key statistic though was Oakland moving five games clear of Tampa Bay, which is the highest-placed team outside the current wildcard spots. With only 20 games to play, it appears the A's can prepare for the postseason, but the Angels - half a game behind Tampa Bay - are faltering in their playoff bid.
The West-leading Texas Rangers maintained a three-game lead over Oakland by defeating the Cleveland Indians 5-2. Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre both homered but both also left the game injured.
The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees remain locked together atop the AL East after both won. The Orioles edged Tampa Bay 3-2, dropping the Rays three games off the pace. Manny Machado led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and came home for the winning run on a hit by Nate McLouth.
The Yankees had a similarly tight win, pipping the Boston Red Sox 5-4. Curtis Granderson hit two homers and Robinson Cano added one for New York, which lost veteran Derek Jeter to an ankle injury.
The division race in the AL Central also remains too close to call, with the Detroit Tigers beating the Chicago White Sox 8-6 to cut the gap between them to one game. Prince Fielder hit a three-run homer for the Tigers while starter Max Scherzer (16-6) pitched six effective innings to reach 16 wins for the first time in his career.
In the other AL games, the Seattle Mariners downed the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 and the Kansas City Royals were 10-5 winners over the Minnesota Twins.
In the National League, the Cincinnati Reds look like becoming the first team to secure a playoff place as they moved 11 1-2 games clear atop the Central division, with 18 to play, by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1, completing a three-game sweep.
