Athletics win to remain in hunt for playoffs
THE Oakland Athletics maintained their two-game lead in the race for the last American League wild card berth by beating Texas 3-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday in Texas.
The win also put the Athletics within four games of the Rangers for the AL West lead.
George Kottaras hit a homer leading off the top of the tenth, and Evan Scribner pitched perfectly in the bottom half to give the A's a vital win and an outside shot at the division title, with eight games to play.
Oakland's win meant the Los Angeles Angels made up no ground in the wild-card chase despite a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. Angels starter Zack Greinke threw 13 strikeouts in just five innings.
In the East division, both the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles lost, keeping New York in the division lead by 1 1-2 games.
The Yankees were beaten 4-5 by the Minnesota Twins. The game turned in the seventh inning as New York led 3-1, but Phil Hughes loaded the bases, and replacement pitcher Boone Logan gave up the tying run with a wild pitch and Denard Spain then hit a two-run double.
Baltimore could not capitalize, beaten 4-0 at home by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Central division is even tighter, with the Detroit Tigers moving level with the Chicago White Sox atop the standings.
The Tigers downed the Kansas City Royals 2-0.
Chicago, which led the division by three games a week ago, further jeopardized their playoff hopes with a 4-3 defeat by the lowly Cleveland Indians.
In the other AL game, the Tampa Bay Rays kept a pulse in their faint playoff hopes with a 5-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.
In the National League, the Cincinnati Reds moved level for the NL's best record by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2.
The Reds tied the Washington Nationals on 93-61 records.
The Nationals lost 6-3 at the Philadelphia Phillies and saw their lead in the NL East cut to four games by the Atlanta Braves.
Atlanta secured its spot in the postseason with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins.
In other NL games, it was: Diamondbacks 7, Giants 2; Cardinals 4, Astros 0; Pirates 10, Mets 6, and Rockies 10, Cubs 5.
