BoSox widen lead after stopping Rays
THE Boston Red Sox opened a three-game lead atop the American League East division with a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday in St Petersburg with Alfredo Aceves throwing six solid innings and Daniel Nava hitting a homer.
The New York Yankees dropped further away from Boston as they lost 5-2 to Oakland.
Also on Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates feasted on San Francisco's pitchers with a season-high offensive performance to overcome the Giants 12-8 in a slugfest.
The Pirates banged out a season-high 18 hits and 12 runs to get their fourth win in five games and consolidate their strong start to the season.
Also, Edinson Volquez had nine strikeouts to guide San Diego past Atlanta, and Cleveland clinched a series win over Texas.
Washington's Ross Ohlendorf pitched strongly in his Nationals debut to set up the win over Colorado, Kansas City pinched a 10-inning win over Detroit, and the New York Mets beat St Louis thanks chiefly to starter Dillon Gee.
Boston's Alfredo Aceves (3-1), recalled before the game from the minors, allowed one run in six innings.
Nava put the Red Sox up 2-0 on a third-inning, two-run homer and that was enough to hang on for victory.
Oakland's Brandon Moss hit a two-run homer and a solo shot for his third career two-homer game as the Athletics beat the Yankees for their 10th consecutive home victory.
Moss hit his 10th homer of the season in the second inning and 11th with a solo drive in the eighth. He has only five hits over his past 40 at-bats, but all have been homers.
Oakland improved to 40-27; its best start to a season in 23 years.
San Diego's Edinson Volquez struck out a season-high nine in seven innings to help the Padres to a 5-3 win over Atlanta and a three-game sweep of the National League East leaders.
