Boston's Lackey blasts away Angels

BOSTON Red Sox starter John Lackey gave up just two hits and one earned run through seven innings against the Los Angeles Angels to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 win against his former team on Wednesday.

Lackey had a shaky start to the game, loading the bases in the second inning by giving up a single, a walk and then hitting catcher Mike Napoli with a pitch, before striking out Brandon Wood.

He settled down after the second inning and retired six straight batters before Wood hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to break his shutout bid.

Lackey (3-1) then retired the next seven batters he faced before being replaced by Daniel Bard to start the eighth inning.

"Honestly, it was different facing the jersey, I guess," Lackey told reporters. "But like I said, there's not a whole lot of guys in that lineup that I played with for an extended period of time.

"It was more pitchers and coaching staff that I know more than the guys swinging."

Boston had taken the lead when Adrian Beltre's single scored J D Drew in the bottom of the second inning before David Ortiz, who went 2-for-3, hit a solo home run off starter Joel Piniero to extend the lead to 2-0 in the fourth. Wood then hit his homer before Beltre added a solo home run off reliever Brian Fuentes in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 3-1 to Boston.

"I'm hitting the ball with more power, more often," Beltre said. "That's what I wanted to do.

"Hitting .300 is really good for me. I'd always rather be a .300 hitter, but you add some power to it, some RBIs, that's always even better."

Piniero, a former Red Sox pitcher, also pitched well for the Angels going six complete innings allowing just two runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking three.

Jonathan Papelbon earned the save for Boston retiring all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth.

Elsewhere in the American League, the Minnesota Twins completed their first series sweep of the season at the ninth attempt, beating the Detroit Tigers 4-3.

Also, it was: Rays 8, Mariners 3; Athletics 4, Rangers 1; Blue Jays 5, Indians 4; Yankees 7, Orioles 5; and White Sox 9, Royals 2.

In Philadelphia, Kyle Kendrick threw seven scoreless innings to steer the Phillies to a 4-0 win over the St Louis Cardinals as the National League's East division leaders overcame the Central pacesetters.

Kendrick (1-1) and Cardinals starter Brad Penny (3-2) provided an impressive pitchers' duel.

The Phillies runs came from twin two-run homers, from Placido Polanco and Shane Victorino.

In San Diego, Ian Stewart's home run leading off the 12th inning gave Colorado a tight 6-5 win over San Diego. Stewart, who entered the game in the 10th, drove a pitch from Tim Stauffer (2-1) into the seats in left-center, his fifth of the season. The home run ended Stauffer's streak of 17 1-3 scoreless innings to open the season.

Elsewhere, it was: Reds 5, Mets 4, 10 innings; Giants 3, Marlins 2; Braves 7, Nationals 6, 10 innings; Pirates 4, Cubs 2; Brewers 11, Dodgers 3; and Astros 4, Diamondbacks 2.
