Braves hit back in wildcard race
THE Atlanta Braves rebounded from gut-wrenching defeat with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Florida Marlins on Tuesday to get back on track in the National League Wildcard race.
The Braves, heartbroken on Monday when Florida's Omar Infante blasted a walk-off two-run homer to seal a 6-5 win, responded with a strong pitching effort as Randall Delgado tossed five scoreless innings before the bullpen held the Marlins hit-less in the final four.
Martin Prado had three hits and Atlanta never looked back after taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
"Today was a big game, there's no doubt about it," Braves catcher Brian McCann told reporters. "Randall set the tone and we swung the bats well. It was a good night for the team."
Atlanta (88-67), which held an 8.5-game lead in the Wildcard race early this month, has since had its lead trimmed to 2.5 games over St. Louis. The Cardinals maintained the pressure by beating the New York Mets 11-6.
Despite a 3-5 home loss to Pittsburgh, the Arizona Diamondbacks maintained their 5.5-game advantage in the NL West after the San Francisco Giants fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1.
In Chicago, the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cubs 5-1 to keep their 5.5-game lead in the NL Central with just seven games left, while the New York Yankees grabbed a stranglehold on the American League East with a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees (93-60) are now six games up on the tumbling Boston Red Sox who fell 7-5 to Baltimore but kept their two-game Wildcard edge over the Rays.
The Red Sox (88-67) held a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning but closer Jonathan Papelbon allowed a devastating three-run double to Robert Andino. "This game's on me," Papelbon said. "I was put in the situation where the team needed me, I didn't come through. I take full responsibility."
In Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 10-6 win over the Blue Jays that pulled them within 3.5 games of the AL Wildcard lead. The Angels are five games behind in the AL West, trailing Texas after the Rangers beat Oakland 7-2.
