Buchholz sparkles as Red Sox sweep Dodgers

CLAY Buchholz tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings to help the Boston Red Sox to a 2-0 win and a third in a row over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Buchholz (10-4) allowed just three hits before he left in the seventh when the Dodgers had runners on first and third with two outs.

Reliever Daniel Bard got the final out of the inning and pitched the eighth before Jonathan Papelbon handled the ninth for Boston (43-28), which has now won its last six games.

"I think it is just having to go through some struggles before you can pitch with confidence in key situations," Buchholz told reporters.

"In a nutshell that is what I think has helped me get better."

In other interleague games on Sunday, it was: Tigers 3, Diamondbacks 1; Yankees 4, Mets 0; Giants 9, Blue Jays 6; Marlins 4, Rays 1; White Sox 6, Nationals 3; Pirates 5, Indians 3; Braves 8, Royals 5; Twins 4, Phillies 1; Rangers 5, Astros 4 (in 10 innings); Athletics 3, Cardinals 2; Cubs 12, Angels 1; Padres 9, Orioles 4; and Mariners 1, Reds 0.

In the only National League game, it was: Brewers 6, Rockies 1.

In Boston, Hiroki Kuroda struck out nine batters in seven innings for the Dodgers (38-31) but the Red Sox scored in the first and David Ortiz drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Dodgers' slugger Manny Ramirez had two hits and finished 5-for-12 over the three games in his first return to Fenway Park since being traded from Boston to Los Angeles in 2008.

Ramirez homered a night earlier but could not lead the slumping Dodgers to a win over the weekend as the team fell two games behind the first-place San Diego Padres in the NL West.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia finished with three hits after driving in the game-winning run in the ninth one day earlier.

In Denver, Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart hit two-run doubles in a five-run ninth inning as Milwaukee averted a series sweep by rallying past Colorado.

With the score tied at 1-1, the Brewers broke through against reliever Manuel Corpas (1-4), who allowed all five runs while facing five batters without retiring any of them.
