Cardinals clinch berth in the postseason

THE St Louis Cardinals claimed the last spot in the Major League Baseball playoffs despite losing on Tuesday, while two divisional titles will go down to the wire on the final day of the regular season.

The Cardinals were beaten 3-1 at home by the Cincinnati Reds, but the Los Angeles Dodgers - who had to win to stay alive in the fight for the second and final wild-card berth - lost 4-3 to the San Francisco Giants. St Louis will play the one-off wild-card game at the Atlanta Braves tomorrow, with the winner to progress to the National League divisional series.

The American League East and West division titles remain up for grabs going into the final day.

In the East, both the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles won tight encounters, maintaining the Yankees one-game lead. New York can clinch the crown with a win over the Boston Red Sox, but if the Yankees lose, and the Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays, they would be level and would play a tiebreaker today in Baltimore. The winner of that game would go straight into the division series, while the loser would go into the sudden-death wild-card game.

The Yankees edged Boston 4-3 while Baltimore kept in the hunt with a 1-0 win at the Rays.
