Cardinals win as Westbrook blanks Padres
ST Louis pitcher Jake Westbrook pitched brilliantly through eight innings to lead the Cardinals to a 4-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
The loss dropped the Padres into second place in the tight National League West division race, half a game behind the San Francisco Giants who defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2.
"It was the first zero I had put up in a long time," Westbrook said. "It was a good feeling."
Westbrook scattered six hits, struck out three, and recorded 16 ground ball outs. He walked three and stranded eight runners to earn his second win for St Louis and eighth of the season.
"He was exactly what we needed," said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. "He made so many good pitches. That was quite a piece of work."
Kyle McClellan pitched a scoreless ninth inning in relief.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the sixth inning, with Albert Pujols hitting an RBI double and Yadier Molina a two-run single, to end Padres' starter Tim Stauffer's game.
Matt Holiday's RBI single in the first inning had given the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.
Former Cardinal Ryan Ludwick, who was sent to the Padres in a three-team trade that brought Westbrook to St Louis, made his first return to St Louis and was 1-for-4 at the plate.
In San Francisco, the Giants took over the NL West lead with a 10-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Aubrey Huff hit a three-run homer and Buster Posey had a solo shot.
Jonathan Sanchez (11-8) struck out a career-high 12 as the Giants took a half-game lead on the Padres.
San Francisco is in sole possession of first place for the first time since May 6.
Dodgers starter Ted Lilly (8-11) was done after 3 1-3 innings for his shortest outing of the season.
Also, it was: Diamondbacks 3, Reds 1; and Mets 6, Pirates 2.
In the American League, Delmon Young hit his 18th homer and Carl Pavano got his 17th win as the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 8-5 to complete the three-game sweep.
Paul Konerko hit a solo homer in the third against Pavano (17-11) after being drilled in the face by a pitch in the first inning. AJ Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez also went deep, but the Twins walked away with their 11th win in 12 games.
Minnesota went 13-5 against the White Sox this season and lead them by nine in the AL Central with 16 games to play as it tries to lock down its sixth division title in 10 years.
Young hit a two-run homer off Mark Buehrle (12-11) in the fifth to make it 6-2.
Matt Capps worked the ninth for his 39th save overall and 13th in 15 chances since the Twins acquired him from Washington.
In other action, it was: Indians 3, Angels 2, 11 innings.
