Cards hand Braves eighth straight loss
JAIME Garcia pitched seven scoreless innings as the St Louis Cardinals handed the Atlanta Braves an eighth straight loss with a 6-0 shutout on Wednesday.
Garcia struck out five batters for his second win of the year and got early run support as the Cardinals (14-7) earned a fourth victory in a row.
"He made a lot of good pitches," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa told reporters. "Nice variety, mixed them up. The catcher caught him beautifully. Quality job."
Slugger Albert Pujols had two hits and added an RBI in the first inning, where St Louis scored twice before tacking on three runs in the fifth to leave the Braves (8-13) in a deep hole.
Atlanta starter Kenshin Kawakami allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings, surrendering two scores on wild pitches as he fell to 0-4 on the season.
The Braves failed to give Kawakami any run support and were shutout for the third time during their losing streak.
Heralded rookie Jason Heyward took the night off as he has just one hit in his last 20 at-bats.
Atlanta is in the midst of its worst slump since losing 10 straight in 2006 and it will try to avoid being swept in the finale of the four-game series with St Louis.
"It's just another downer," Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said. "You come out and you have high hopes ever time. But I promise you we will win another game this year."
The Central Division-leading Cardinals were led by Skip Schumaker, who had two hits and two runs, along with David Freese who went 2-for-3 with a two-RBI single.
In San Francisco, Philadelphia's Wilson Valdez doubled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning as the Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 7-6 to avoid their first sweep of 2010.
Jayson Werth's three-run double with two outs in the ninth kept the visitors in the game.
In other National League action, it was: Padres 6, Marlins 4; Nationals 3, Cubs 2; Diamondbacks 12, Rockies 11, 10 innings; Mets 7, Dodgers 3; Pirates 6, and Brewers 5, 14 innings.
In the American League, Tampa Bay starter James Shields struck out 12 in seven innings to guide the Rays to a 10-3 win over the Oakland Athletics in St Petersburg, Florida.
Also, it was: Tigers 11, Twins 6; Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 0; Angels 4, Indians 3; Mariners 6, Royals 5; Rangers 6, White Sox 5; and Yankees 8, Orioles 3.
