Cards return to playoffs
Paul Goldschmidt hit a clutch ninth-inning double as the St Louis Cardinals clinched a Major League Baseball playoff spot with a 3-2 win over the struggling Chicago Cubs on Sunday. The Cards will return to the playoffs for the first time in four years as they swept the Cubs in a four-game series at historic Wrigley Field for the first time since 1921. The Cards improved to 89-67. They are assured of at least a wildcard spot and lead the National League Central division by three games over Milwaukee. The Brewers beat Pittsburgh 4-3. The Cubs, eliminated from the division race, are now four games back in the NL wildcard hunt after suffering their sixth straight loss. Cards starter Miles Mikolas allowed two runs and eight hits in 7 2/3 innings. Tyler Webb pitched out of an eighth-inning jam to record the win and Andrew Miller posted his sixth save by closing it out in the ninth. Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish took the loss despite striking out a dozen batters. Japan’s Darvish allowed seven hits in 8 1/3 innings.
