Chamberlain, Swisher fire Yankees past Tigers

JOBA Chamberlain hurled seven innings of three-hit ball and Nick Swisher homered from both sides of the plate to help the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 8-6 on Wednesday.

Chamberlain (1-0) yielded one run, striking out six and walking three, to log his first win of the year as the Yankees closed a six-game road trip with two wins after dropping the first four, including a three-game sweep by the Boston Red Sox.

"It's like going 0-for-4 and getting a hit in your last at-bat. The attitudes are good," Swisher told reporters.

"Anytime you can come into someone's ballpark and take two out of three you've got to really feel proud of yourselves."

Elsewhere in the American League, it was: Angels 3, Orioles 2; White Sox 6, Mariners 3; Red Sox 6, Indians 5 (in 10 innings); Twins 8, Rays 3; and Royals 11, Blue Jays 3.

In the National League, it was: Giants 9, Dodgers 4; Brewers 1, Pirates 0; Marlins 4, Mets 3; Rockies 7, Padres 5; Diamondbacks 10, Cubs 0; Nationals 4, Phillies 1; Cardinals 5, Braves 3; and Reds 3, Astros 0.

Seven-run explosion

In Detroit, switch-hitter Swisher belted a three-run homer from the left side in New York's seven-run explosion in the fourth, and added a solo shot batting right-handed in the fifth.

A 10-run seventh inning carried the Yankees to an 11-0 victory over Detroit on Tuesday.

"We got a big homestand coming up and we still got a lot to prove," Swisher said about an eight-game stretch at home starting today (Shanghai time) against the Los Angeles Angels.

Swisher has a team-high seven homers and 19 runs batted in this season.

Chamberlain exited with an 8-1 lead and the Tigers gave New York a scare with five runs in the ninth, including a three-run homer by Curtis Granderson, before Mariano Rivera ended it by getting Placido Polanco to pop out to second.

Tigers starter Rick Porcello (1-3) sailed through the first three innings before the 20-year-old was knocked around in the fourth, which saw Hideki Matsui follow Swisher's three-run blast with a bases-loaded double.
