Chisox stretch home-winning streak

THE red-hot Chicago White Sox stretched their home winning streak to 11 games with a 9-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.

Ramon Castro led the way with two home runs as the American League Central-leading White Sox continued their dominance at their home ballpark, where they have not lost in more than a month.

Chicago starter Freddy Garcia (10-4) allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings to get the win.

The Mariners (39-64) scored two runs in the seventh to pull within 7-5, but Paul Konerko and Carlos Quentin homered in the bottom half of the inning to clinch a four-game sweep for the White Sox (57-44).

"We're playing well right now but we have to play well -- Minnesota is playing well too," Konerko told reporters after launching his 25th home run of the season.

"We're getting to the point in the season where it's not really about the games we win or what our record is.

"It's about games ahead and games behind."

Chicago had trailed Minnesota by more than nine games in the division in early June, but have won 33 of 44 games since June 9.

After falling behind 0-2 on Thursday, the White Sox scored four runs in the third to move ahead 4-2 before Castro hit solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to build their lead. Omar Vizquel added an RBI single in the sixth and finished with three hits and two RBIs.

Ichiro Suzuki had three doubles to lead the Mariners' offense but starter David Pauley lasted just 2 2/3 innings and allowed four runs.

In other action, it was: Yankees 11, Indians 4; Rays 4, Tigers 2; Rangers 7, Athletics 4; and Orioles 6, Royals 5, 11 innings.

In the National League, Oscar Salazar's single in the bottom of the ninth gave the NL West-leading San Diego Padres a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Padres took two of three games in the series, opening a seven-game gap between them.

Elsewhere, it was: Marlins 5, Giants 0; Mets 4, Cardinals 0; Nationals 5, Braves 3; Phillies 3, Diamondbacks 2, 11 innings; and Rockies 9, Pirates 3.
