Davis adds to Mariners' woes
RAJAI Davis loves driving opposing pitchers crazy and the speedy Toronto Blue Jays outfielder did just that on Wednesday by stealing three bases in a 6-5 extra-innings win over the slumping Seattle Mariners.
After hitting a one-out single in the bottom of the 14th inning, Davis stole second and third base before scoring the winning run when John McDonald hit a sacrifice fly.
"That's where I have my most fun, on the bases," Davis told reporters after recording his team-leading 28th stolen base.
"It's just exciting being in that position with opportunities to help us win a game and fortunately for us we came out of the winning side."
Once Davis got on base he said he was just watching what Seattle pitcher Jamey Wright was throwing and figured he could get a good jump on stealing bases to put his team in position to end a two-game skid.
While Davis's antics can often rattle opposing pitchers, especially in a game that eclipsed the four-hour mark, McDonald said he was not distracted during his at-bat as his team mate moved his way into scoring position.
"One of the great things about Rajai is he loves to steal third base and he loves to steal every time he's out there," said McDonald. "So I kind of anticipate it and let him do his thing and trust that he is going to get the job done for us."
Davis also stole second base during the bottom of the ninth inning and advanced to third on a throwing error by Mariners catcher Miguel Olivo that had given the Blue Jays a chance to end the game until Eric Thames grounded out.
The defeat stretched the Mariners' season-long losing skid to 10 games, the team's longest winless streak since dropping 12 consecutive in 2008.
The Blue Jays had erased a three-run deficit in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5.
Home run leader
Major-league home run leader Jose Bautista returned to the Toronto lineup after missing three games with an ankle injury and drove in the tying run when he singled to center field during the seventh inning to score Yunel Escobar.
In Anaheim, the Texas Rangers extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 7-0 victory over divisional rivals the Los Angeles Angels.
Starter Alexi Ogando baffled the Angels during eight scoreless innings to give the Rangers another stellar pitching performance en route to their longest winning streak since 1991, when the team won a franchise-best 14 consecutive games. Darren Oliver worked the ninth inning to wrap up Ogando's 10th win of the season and send the Rangers (56-41) steamrolling forward.
