Dodgers’ batters pound 18 hits to stuff Cardinals

St Louis pitcher Shelby Miller was hit by a line drive on the second pitch of the game as the Los Angeles Dodgers pounded the Cardinals 13-4 in St Louis on Wednesday.

The win helped the Dodgers maintain their five-game lead in the National League West division, while the Cardinals dropped further off the pace in the NL Central, three games behind leader Pittsburgh.

Among other key results, Detroit edged Cleveland 6-5 in 14 innings to notch its 11th straight win and build its American League Central lead, while Jay Bruce’s contributions with bat and arm saw Cincinnati produce a narrow 6-5 win over Oakland.

Atlanta stretched its winning streak to 13 and its NL East lead to 15-1/2 games by completing a sweep of Washington with a 6-3 victory, Martin Prado powered Arizona to a tight 9-8 win over Tampa Bay, while Texas moved almost level with Oakland atop the AL West by beating the Los Angeles Angels 10-3.

In other games, it was: Red Sox 7, Astros 5; Pirates 4, Marlins 2; Royals 5, Twins 2; Cubs 5, Phillies 2; Mets 5, Rockies 0; Mariners 9, Blue Jays 7; Orioles 10, Padres 3; White Sox 6, Yankees 5 (12 innings); and Brewers 6, Giants 1.

Many fans had yet to take their seats in St Louis when the key moment arrived, as Carl Crawford’s line-drive hit Miller near the right elbow and rebounded into left field for a double. X-rays later cleared Miller of serious damage, but his replacements struggled against the Dodgers.

Andre Ethier and Skip Schumaker each had three hits and a season-best four RBIs and Crawford had a season-best four hits and a walk. The Dodgers had their season’s best 18 hits.
