Estrada returns to bullpen with win

MILWAUKEE will send Marco Estrada back to the bullpen with some reluctance after the makeshift starter delivered another strong outing to spark the Brewers to an 11-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

Estrada, who made his third straight start since replacing previously injured pitcher Chris Narveson in the rotation, allowed just two runs over seven innings to extend his impressive stretch on the mound.

"You don't really expect, when you have to fill in for somebody, to have those kind of performances," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke told reporters. "I just wanted to give the team innings and a chance to win. That's all I worked on," Estrada said.

Despite winning two of his three starts and allowing just three runs, the 28-year-old Estrada is likely to go back to being a reliever now that Narveson has returned from the disabled list.

Milwaukee's offense sent Estrada off on a positive note by swinging for 17 hits and burying the Pirates (60-68) early with a seven-run second inning that established a 7-0 advantage.

Nyjer Morgan went 4-for-6 with two RBIs, and Casey McGehee launched a three-run blast in the second as the Brewers (78-53) terrorized losing starter Ross Ohlendorf before pouring it on against the Pittsburgh bullpen.

The win extended Milwaukee's commanding lead in the National League Central to 10 games over the St. Louis Cardinals while the Pirates have stumbled to 16 1/2 games out of first.

Pittsburgh's Ohlendorf was making his first start since April 8 when he went on the DL with a shoulder injury.

"I was really excited to get back today, (and) I was disappointed with how I pitched," Ohlendorf said.

"I know I can pitch better. I wish I had more season, but I'm glad I have several starts to get on track."

After falling behind, Josh Harrison hit a home run to pull the Pirates within 7-2. They added two more runs in the eighth, but it was far too late.

Milwaukee slugger Prince Fielder recorded his 100th RBI of the season in the sixth and Jonathan Lucroy added three hits for the Brewers, who scored twice in the ninth to close out the triumph.

In Arlington, Texas, Boston's Adrian Gonzalez homered twice as the Red Sox finally got their first win of the season at Texas, beating the Rangers 11-5 in Tuesday's clash of American League divisional leaders.

Jacoby Ellsbury made an immediate impact in his return to the lineup, leading off the game with a single, stealing second and scoring on Gonzalez's first homer, putting the Red Sox ahead to stay. The All-Star center fielder had missed three games after getting by a pitch.

Boston, which had lost its first four games at Rangers Ballpark this season, moved within two percentage points of first-place New York in the AL East.

Red Sox starter John Lackey (12-9) pitched 6 2-3 innings for his seventh win in his past eight starts.

Texas starter Colby Lewis (11-9) allowed seven runs over six innings.

In St. Petersburg, Brad Penny pitched effectively into the seventh inning as Detroit edged Tampa Bay 2-1.
