Explosive Rangers rout Bosox

THE Boston Red Sox put their rivalry with the New York Yankees on hold and paid tribute to the team's former owner before getting routed 2-7 by the Texas Rangers on Thursday in a game that got out of reach early.

Vocal fans in Fenway Park that thrive on showering Yankee players with boos whenever the teams meet in Boston, displayed a rare sign of respect to their rival during a pregame tribute to George Steinbrenner, who died on Tuesday at age 80.

Images of Steinbrenner were put on the video screen at Fenway, a military honor guard marched into center field, and then a moment of silence was observed by a sold-out crowd that eventually offered a warm applause.

The tribute was followed by an offensive explosion in the first inning that gave the Rangers a 6-0 lead before the Red Sox even got to the plate.

After Elvis Andrus of Texas struck out to open the game, the next six Rangers managed hits, which included a two-run homer by catcher Bengie Molina, against knuckleball pitcher Tim Wakefield, that gave them a six-run lead.

The Rangers easily held on for a 7-2 win that snapped a four-game losing skid and gave them a four-and-a-half game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West division.

"Before the (All-Star) break, I felt like we needed a break," said outfielder Josh Hamilton, who had three doubles before leaving the game in the seventh inning with knee soreness.

"Some of the guys were tired. Everybody got some rest and we came out stronger."

Texas pitcher Tommy Hunter improved to 6-0 after giving up just five hits and two runs in 6-2/3 inning, while Wakefield fell to 3-8 after giving up six runs on eight hits before leaving the game in the third inning.

In Minneapolis, Gordon Beckham hit a home run and had two RBIs as John Danks recovered from his worst inning of the season to help the Chicago White Sox win their ninth game in a row, 8-7 over the Twins.

Elsewhere in the American League, the Angels thumped the Mariners 8-3.

In the National league, Jair Jurrjens gave up only one run, rookie Jason Heyward made two strong defensive plays in his return from an injury as the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1.

Martin Prado and Chipper Jones hit home runs in the third inning off starting pitcher Dave Bush (4-7).

Also, it was: Cardinals 7, Dodgers 1; Cubs 12, Phillies 6; and Giants 2, Mets 0.
