Halladay's complete game sinks Braves
ACE pitcher Roy Halladay enjoyed an impressive return to form by tossing a complete game in the Philadelphia Phillies' 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
Having allowed a career-high 13 hits and four runs in his previous start on Wednesday, the durable right-hander breezed to his seventh complete game of the season with his new team.
"You go out there trying to win every time - but definitely from a numbers standpoint and the standings, it's important to win games in your division," Halladay told reporters after needing just 93 pitches. "It is an important series for us."
Acquired in an off-season trade by two-time reigning National League champions the Phillies, Halladay (10-7) allowed a solo home run to Chipper Jones in the first inning but settled to strike out seven batters while allowing just five hits.
Greg Dobbs gave the home team a 2-1 lead with a go-ahead homer in the sixth and Philadelphia (43-38) added a run in the eighth.
Struggled
The Phillies, who had lost four of their previous five games and have struggled for consistency this year, now lie four games adrift of the leading Braves in the National League East after winning the opener of their seven-game home stand.
Atlanta was given a strong start from pitcher Derek Lowe who allowed two runs in seven innings but fell to 9-7 for the year.
"You can't hang your head when a guy pitches like that," Lowe said. "He's one of the best in the game."
Braves catcher Brian McCann finished 2-for-4 along with Jones. Dobbs went 2-for-3 for the Phillies who also had two hits each from Raul Ibanez, Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth.
In other NL action, it was: Reds 8, Mets 6; Marlins 6, Dodgers 5; Cubs 9, Diamondbacks 4; and Giants 6, Brewers 1.
In the American league, Rays 6, Red Sox 5; Yankees 3, Athletics 1; White Sox 9, Angels 2; Indians 9, Rangers 3; Royals 6, Mariners 4, 10 innings; and Tigers 12, Orioles 9.
