Ibanez's double fires Phillies to sweep of Pirates

RAUL Ibanez delivered two decisive swings to carry the Philadelphia Phillies to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the hard-luck Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings on Sunday.
The 39-year-old veteran blasted a two-run home run in the eighth inning to erase Pittsburgh's 5-3 lead, then delivered the game-winning RBI double in the 10th as the hosts Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Pirates.
Hunter Pence, who was acquired by Philadelphia in a trade with the Houston Astros on Friday, doubled in the 10th inning and scored the winning run on Ibanez's hit.
"Absolutely unbelievable day by (Ibanez)," Pence told reporters.
"You look around and any number of these guys can carry you per day, and that's the beauty of it."
A fantastic day for Ibanez also included a homer in the second and he finished 3-for-5 with four RBI for the Major League-best Phillies (68-39) while the Pirates have now lost three extra-inning contests in their last six games.
Pittsburgh's unlucky stint with extra-inning games began with its controversial 19-inning loss to the Atlanta Braves last Wednesday.
Losers of eight of their last 11, the Pirates (54-52) appeared headed for a much-needed victory but instead continued their slide as they remained third in the National League Central standings after leading the division a week ago.
Elsewhere in the NL, it was: Reds 9, Giants 0; Marlins 3, Braves 1; Nationals 3, Mets 2; Brewers 5, Astros 4; Padres 8, Rockies 3; Diamondbacks 6, Dodgers 3; and Cubs 6, Cardinals 3.
In the American League, it was: Yankees 4, Orioles 2; Royals 5, Indians 3; Tigers 3, Angels 2; Blue Jays 7, Rangers 3; Red Sox 5, White Sox 3; Athletics 7, Twins 3; and Rays 8, Mariners 1.
In Philadelphia, Lyle Overbay's two-run homer in the sixth put the Pirates ahead 4-3 and they added a run in the seventh to support starter Jeff Karstens who tossed seven innings.
Pittsburgh reliever Tony Watson (0-2) surrendered the winning hit in the 10th and took the loss while Philadelphia's Antonio Bastardo (4-0) successfully worked the 10th for the win.
Phillies rookie Vance Worley took the no-decision after pitching six innings and leaving with his team trailing 3-4.
