Indians embarrass NY in new Yankee Stadium

THE Cleveland Indians erupted for nine runs in the seventh inning to romp to a 10-2 victory and ruin the New York Yankees's house-warming party at their new US$1.5 billion stadium on Thursday.

The Indians walloped two home runs, including a grand slam by Grady Sizemore, off reliever Damaso Marte in their seventh-inning explosion.

Cliff Lee, last year's Cy Young Award winner who was coming off two sub-par outings this season, picked up the victory to improve to 1-2.

Lee went six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and three walks.

"It's neat to say I started the first game in the new Yankee Stadium and to get the win makes it that much neater," Lee said.

Reliever Jose Veres (0-1), who preceded Marte on the mound, took the loss.

Yankees starter CC Sabathia, signed to a seven-year, US$161 million free-agent contract in the off-season, also yielded one run but left with two outs in the sixth inning after throwing 122 pitches.

New York left-fielder Johnny Damon registered the maiden hit in the new stadium on a single to center in the first frame and Yankees catcher Jorge Posada claimed the first homer, a blast over the wall in center that tied it 1-1 in the fifth.

The Yankees fell to 5-5 in front of a crowd of 48,271.

In other American League games, it was: Blue Jays 9, Twins 2; White Sox 3, Rays 2; and Angels 5, Mariners 1.

In the National League, it was: Nationals 8, Phillies 2; Marlins 6, Braves 2; Cardinals 7, Cubs 4; Astros 6, Pirates 3; Dodgers 7, Giants 2; and Padres 6, Mets 5.

In Minneapolis, Roy Halladay stifled the Twins for seven dominant innings as Toronto breezed past Minnesota.

Marco Scutaro broke the game open with a two-run shot in a seven-run seventh highlighted by Kevin Millar's fourth career grand slam. Halladay improved to 8-0 with a 2.77 ERA in his career against the Twins.
