MLB suspends umpire for comments on Texas鈥 Beltre
The World Umpires Association has hit out at Major League Baseball after umpire Joe West was reportedly suspended for three games due to comments he made about Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre.
The 64-year-old鈥檚 comments appeared in a USA Today article marking the umpire鈥檚 5,000th game. When asked who was the 鈥榖iggest complainer鈥 West said it was Beltre. 鈥淓very pitch you call that鈥檚 a strike, he says, 鈥榃hoa! Whoa! Whoa!鈥 I had a game with him recently and the pitch was right down the middle. He tells me, 鈥楾hat ball is outside鈥,鈥 West told USA Today. 鈥淚 told him, 鈥榊ou may be a great ballplayer, but you鈥檙e the worst umpire in the league. You stink鈥.鈥 Local media quoted the umpires association as saying West鈥檚 comments were made in jest and were part and parcel of baseball. 鈥淲e disagree strongly with the decision to punish Joe West simply for sharing a humorous exchange with a player,鈥 the union said in its statement.
