Nats edge Mets in New York
THE Washington Nationals continued their strong start to the season with a series-opening 3-2 victory over the New York Mets on Monday.
Rookie starter Luis Atilano pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 as the Nationals won a third consecutive game and look much improved from last season, when they finished with a league-worst 103 losses.
"We want to get a little respect around the league," Washington manager Jim Riggleman said. "You do that by winning ball games."
Washington (18-14), which leapfrogged New York (17-15) into second place in the National League East division, took a 2-0 lead in the third on back-to-back home runs from Adam Kennedy and Ryan Zimmerman.
Elsewhere in the NL, it was: Reds 2, Pirates 1; Marlins 4, Cubs 2; Braves 8, Brewers 2; Phillies 9, Rockies 5; and Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 3.
In the American League, it was: Tigers 5, Yankees 4; Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6; and Angels 5, Rays 4 (in 11 innings).
In New York, catcher Ivan Rodriguez went 4-for-4 and put the visitors 3-1 ahead with an RBI single in the eighth, the extra run allowing the Nationals to absorb Angel Pagan's solo homer in the ninth.
Miguel Batista allowed the blast but still got through the ninth to complete the save for Washington.
Starter John Maine (1-2) had a solid outing for the Mets and pitched six innings while allowing two runs.
David Wright and Pagan had two hits apiece but the Mets failed to capitalize while going just 1-for-12 with runners in a scoring position.
