Padres drub Giants to make it 5-0 for season

YORVIT Torrealba drove in two runs against his former team to help the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 in Wednesday's clash of the National League West's top teams.

The Padres increased their division lead over the Giants to 2 1/2 games and extended their record against the Giants this season to 5-0.

San Diego's Clayton Richard (2-2) won despite allowing seven hits for the fourth time this season.

Jerry Hairston Jr hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fourth to put the Padres ahead 3-2, then Torrealba hit his second RBI single of the game in the sixth. Scott Hairston added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

San Francisco starter Matt Cain (2-2) walked six and allowed five earned runs.

In New York, Roger Bernadina hit his first two major league homers, including a tiebreaking shot in the ninth inning, and made a marvelous catch to lead the Washington nationals 6-4 over the Mets.

Cristian Guzman singled off Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez (2-1) with one out in the ninth. One out later, Bernadina, known for speed but not power, homered for his third hit of the game.

Nationals starting pitcher Craig Stammen drove in three early runs with a pair of hits. Washington took two of three from New York to win their third straight series.

In Denver, Miguel Olivo went 5 for 5, including a leadoff home run in the 10th inning to lift the Colorado Rockies 4-3 over the Phillies.

The second game of the doubleheader was postponed because of rain and snow.

Olivo sent the first pitch from Chad Durbin (0-1) far over the left-field wall, flipping his bat in celebration as he compensated for a 2-for-28 slump entering the game.

Brad Hawpe hit a tying, two-run triple in the seventh for Colorado.

Also, it was: Reds 5, Pirates 0; Astros 9, Cardinals 6; Cubs 4, Marlins 3; Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 3; and Braves 9, Brewers 2.

In Detroit, New York pitcher Phil Hughes was sharp for seven innings, guiding the Yankees to an 8-0 win over Detroit and a split of their American League doubleheader. Hughes (5-0) struck out eight to help keep New York within 1 1-2 games of AL East leaders Tampa Bay.

Detroit pitcher Jeremy Bonderman (1-2) took the loss despite striking out a season-best seven in a season-long seven innings. Alex Rodriguez's two-out single in the first scored Brett Gardner, who also singled and stole his 16th base this season. Mark Teixeira's two-out single in the third brought home Derek Jeter, who walked and stole second.

In the early game, Detroit won 2-0 thanks to starter Rick Porcello (3-3) who pitched seven innings in his best outing of the year. Magglio Ordonez scored and drove in a run in the sixth inning.

New York starter Javier Vasquez (1-4) lost despite allowing only an infield hit through the first five innings and striking out seven.

Elsewhere, it was: Rays 4, Angels 3; Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 2; Rangers 10, Athletics 1; Twins 3, White Sox 2; Indians 4, Royals 0; and Orioles 5, Mariners 2.
