Padres finalize deal for Kemp
The Padres signed off on the blockbuster deal to bring Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp to San Diego on Thursday after medical issues reportedly threatened to scupper the trade.
In addition to Kemp, the Padres acquired catcher Tim Federowicz from the Dodgers in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal and pitchers Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin.
The Dodgers are also sending the Padres US$32 million towards the remaining US$107 million Kemp is owed on his contract, which runs through 2019.
Kemp has been hampered by hamstring issues in two of the last three seasons, missing 51 games in 2012 and 73 in 2013.
Kemp, who was runner-up in voting for the 2011 National League Most Valuable Player award, played in 150 games in 2014, batting .287 with 25 home runs and 89 runs batted in.
Padres first-year general manager AJ Preller has made aggressive moves in the offseason to bolster an offense that was the worst in the major leagues in 2014.
In addition to landing Kemp, Preller is reportedly working to acquire 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers from the Tampa Bay Rays as part of a three-team swap that also involves the Washington Nationals.
Completion of the Kemp deal paves the way for the Dodgers to complete a swap with Philadelphia鈥檚 Jimmy Rollins. They plan to send Eflin to the Phillies for the veteran shortstop.
