Pirates sweep doubleheader, jump into 1st

The Pittsburgh Pirates went from half a game behind St Louis to 1-1/2 games ahead of the Cardinals in just one day by winning 2-1 and then 6-0 in Tuesday’s doubleheader between the National League’s top teams.

Pittsburgh took the opening game against St Louis 2-1 in 11 innings when Alex Presley’s sharp grounder deflected off the glove of pitcher Kevin Siegrist and rolled into shallow left field, allowing Russell Martin to dash home from second base.

In the night game, Andrew McCutchen clubbed his 15th homer of the season to help the Pirates to a 6-0 victory, as Brandon Cumpton (1-1) pitched seven scoreless innings to pick up his first major league win.

Pittsburgh is a season-high 22 games over .500 and their 21-year streak of losing seasons appears near certain to end.

In other key games, Tampa Bay beat Arizona 5-2 and Boston defeated Seattle 8-2 to leave the Rays still half a game ahead of the Red Sox atop the American League East division.

Atlanta stretched its lead in the National League East into double figures by beating Colorado 11-3.

Los Angeles’ Mark Ellis came up with the ninth-inning two-out winner as the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees 3-2, and Detroit also won an interleague game by defeating Washington 5-1, while Toronto stopped Oakland’s winning run at four games with a 5-0 victory.

In other games, it was: Orioles 4, Astros 3; Rangers 3, Angels 2 (10 innings); Indians 7, White Sox 4; Phillies 7, Giants 3; Mets 4, Marlins 2 (10 innings); Padres 4, Reds 2; Brewers 6, Cubs 5 (Game 1); Brewers 3, Cubs 2 (Game 2); and Royals 7, Twins 2.

Tampa Bay’s Roberto Hernandez came within one out of a complete-game shutout, but did enough to steer the Rays past the Diamondbacks and stay ahead of Boston in the AL East.

Hernandez (6-11) opened the game by hitting a batter and then giving up a single but then retired 22 of the next 25. Eric Chavez ended Hernandez’s shutout bid with a two-out home run in the ninth.

Yunel Escobar and Ben Zobrist drove in two runs each for Tampa Bay.
