Rangers beat up Buehrle, ChiSox
CHICAGO White Sox starter Mark Buehrle suffered a second consecutive early exit when he was forced off the mound in the sixth inning of his team's 6-9 loss to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
Pitching for the first time since he was ejected in the third for arguing a call in a game against Cleveland last Wednesday, Buehrle was called in when the Rangers hit five runs and went on to snap a four-game losing streak.
Buehrle (3-6) left with the game tied 4-4 but was credited for allowing six runs and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Craig Gentry and Ian Kinsler both had two-run hits as part of the five-run onslaught, helping Texas (27-24) recover from a 2-4 deficit to take a 7-4 lead.
"We were coming off four straight losses. It was good to get a win to get untracked," Kinsler told reporters. "A bunch of guys in the bullpen were in the game. We had big hits off the bench and big hits from the starters. It was a good win."
Elsewhere in the American League, it was: Yankees 3, Orioles 1; Indians 3, Tigers 2; Royals 6, Angels 3; Rays 7, Blue Jays 6; Red Sox 9, Athletics 4; and Mariners 7, Twins 1.
In the National League, it was: Braves 7, Phillies 3; Reds 9, Cardinals 8; Pirates 3, Cubs 2; Marlins 6, Brewers 4; Astros 8, Nationals 7; Mets 4, Padres 2; and Rockies 2, Giants 1 (in 11 innings)
In Chicago, the White Sox (22-29) staged a minor rally to move back within one run in the bottom of the inning and loaded the bases with two outs, but reliever Chris Ray managed to end the threat.
Pinch-hitter Justin Smoak tagged on insurance runs for the Rangers with an RBI single in the seventh and a homer in the ninth before Texas closer Neftali Feliz escaped a bases-loaded jam to secure his 14th save of the season.
Rangers starter Rich Harden (3-1) fell into a 4-0 hole in the second but settled down to pick up the win after completing five innings.
Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers sent struggling two-time All-Star pitcher Dontrelle Willis to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-hander Billy Buckner, the team said on Tuesday.
The Tigers had designated Willis, rookie of the year in 2003 and a 22-game winner in 2005 with the Florida Marlins, for a minor league assignment on Sunday and had 10 days to either trade or release the left-handed pitcher.
Willis, acquired by the Tigers from Florida in 2007 after he had lost his top form, went 1-2 with a 4.98 ERA in eight starts for Detroit this season.
Buckner was 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA in three starts with Arizona this season.
In Atlanta, Troy Glaus hit a three-run homer and Tim Hudson pitched six strong innings around a rain delay as the Braves extended their lead in the NL East with a 7-3 victory over Philadelphia.
The Braves moved to 1 1/2 games ahead of two-time reigning NL champion Philadelphia with their 17th win in the last 21 games, including seven in a row. They haven't been in first this late in the season since 2005, the last of their record 14 straight division titles.
Philadelphia is heading in the opposite direction. The Phillies have lost eight of 10 and are struggling at the plate, though Ryan Howard's two-run homer prevented them from being shut out for the sixth time in the last 10 games.
