Rays stay hot with win over Bosox
THE Tampa Bay Rays beat Boston 3-0 on Monday to close within half a game of the Red Sox for the American League East division lead, with Matt Moore pitching his first career shutout.
The red-hot Rays won their 18th of 20 games, coming from seven games off the lead and fourth place to now be in position to take over the divisional lead with a win in their next game.
The New York Yankees are now seven games off the pace in the division following a loss to a Yu Darvish-led Texas, while Baltimore stayed only a game behind the Rays by beating Kansas City for its fifth-straight win.
Tampa Bay's Moore was making his first start since pitching a scoreless fifth inning in the All-Star game and picked up where he left off. Moore (14-3) gave up only two hits - a single in the second and a base-hit in the seventh. He walked one batter and needed just 109 pitches to win his sixth consecutive start.
Ben Zobrist had three hits and James Loney drove in two runs for the Rays.
Texas' Yu Darvish pitched 6 1-3 scoreless innings in his first start in 16 days, combining with three relievers on a shutout as the Rangers beat the Yankees 3-0.
Darvish (9-4), returning from a right trapezius strain threw 60 of 90 pitches for strikes.
Just before the game, the Rangers announced they had acquired right-hander Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs. Garza likely will make his Texas debut today.
Baltimore's Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy each drove in three runs as the Orioles downed Kansas City 9-2.
Davis, who leads the majors with 97 RBIs, drove in a pair of runs with a sixth-inning double and another with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Hardy homered, his 17th of the season, in the four-run sixth with Davis aboard. He picked up another RBI in the third when Davis scored on his ground out.
