Red Sox lose division lead after Cleveland defeat

Cleveland pitcher Justin Masterson struck out nine and again beat his former team as the Indians downed Boston 5-2 on Thursday, costing the Red Sox the outright lead in the American League East division.

Masterson (9-7) allowed five hits in six innings. He improved to 3-0 overall against Boston, which traded him to the Indians to get Victor Martinez in 2009. Carlos Santana hit a go-ahead home run for Cleveland, which avoided falling below .500 for the first time since its third game of the season.

Erik Bedard, making his Red Sox debut after being acquired from Seattle, gave up seven hits in five innings.

Reliever Franklin Morales (0-1) took the loss for Boston, which is now tied with New York in the AL East.

Elsewhere in the American League, it was: Rangers 5, Tigers 2; Yankees 7, White Sox 2; Rays 7, Blue Jays 6, 12 innings; Angels 7, Twins 1; and Royals 9, Orioles 4.

In the National League, Philadelphia's Cliff Lee threw a shutout to give the Phillies a 3-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. Lee lost twice to the Giants in last year's World Series pitching for Texas.

Hunter Pence had three hits and drove in two runs and is hitting .360 (9 for 25) since joining the Phillies from Houston.

Elsewhere in the National League, it was: Cardinals 7, Marlins 4; Rockies 6, Nationals 3; and Cubs 7, Pirates 6.
