Reds, Nationals make playoffs

THE Cincinnati Reds became the first Major League Baseball team to clinch a postseason spot when pitcher Johnny Cueto's 18th victory of the season led them to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday in Chicago.

The victory assured Cincinnati of at least a National League wild card playoff berth. The Reds can win the Central division for the second time in three years with two more wins in their final 12 games.

Reds manager Dusty Baker missed the three-game sweep of the Cubs as he remained in a Chicago hospital after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.

Cueto, loser of his previous three starts, rebounded with six scoreless innings, giving up five hits and four walks while striking out two in pushing his record to 18-9.

The Washington Nationals didn't take long to join the Reds, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 in Washington later on Thursday to bring playoff baseball to the city for the first time since 1933.

The win ensured Washington at least a National League wild-card spot after Ross Detwiler's six strong innings and Ryan Zimmerman's RBI double produced the victory.

A crowd of 30,359 stood and cheered in the ninth inning, then got even louder when Drew Storen struck out Hanley Ramirez to end it. Manager Davey Johnson saluted the fans as he left the field and the team wore caps acknowledging the playoff berth.

The Dodgers are now three games behind St Louis for the NL's second wild-card spot. Milwaukee moved ahead of Los Angeles with its win over Pittsburgh.

In other National League games, it was: Phillies 16, Mets 1; Cardinals 5, Astros 4; Brewers 9, Pirates 7; Giants 9, Rockies 2; and Padres 6, Diamondbacks 5.

In American League games, it was Athletics 12, Tigers 4; Royals 4, White Sox 3; Yankees 10, Blue Jays 7; Rays 7, Red Sox 4; and Indians 4, Twins 3.

In New York, Ichiro Suzuki homered to start a comeback, then hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a seven-run fourth inning capped by Nick Swisher's grand slam as the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays to open a one-game American League East lead over idle Baltimore.
