Reds snap Padres' 8-game win run

THE Cincinnati Reds rallied to snap the San Diego Padres' Major League-best eight-game winning streak with a 5-4 victory on Sunday.

Jay Bruce delivered a double that allowed Scott Rolen to score the game-tying run on a throwing error and Ramon Hernandez had the go-ahead RBI single as the Reds scored twice in the eighth inning to win.

"We needed this win badly," Reds manager Dusty Baker told reporters, his team having lost eight of 10 heading into the game. "The guys played hard today, they played smart. They responded. They wanted it badly."

Cincinnati (8-11) reliever Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth and picked up his seventh save despite walking two batters and allowing a runner to advance to third base.

Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run home run in the fourth and Kyle Blanks had a two-run double in the sixth as the Padres (11-7) took a 4-2 lead, but Rolen made it a one-run game with a solo homer in the sixth.

Reliever Arthur Rhodes pitched a perfect eighth and was credited with the win for Cincinnati, which avoided being swept by San Diego in its three-game series.

Baker had a meeting with his players following its loss to the Padres on Saturday and the team responded.

"(Baker's) meeting with the team was much needed," said Reds starter Homer Bailey, who allowed four runs in six innings of his no-decision.

"We knew it was coming. There were a lot of excuses going around. Everybody needs to look within themselves and go out and play the game."

San Diego starter Clayton Richard was in line for the win after allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings before reliever Mike Adams surrendered the opposing rally in the eighth.

Avoids sweep

In San Francisco, Brad Penny, Jason Motte and Ryan Franklin combined for a nine-hitter and Albert Pujols hit his team-leading seventh homer, helping St Louis avoid a series sweep with a 2-0 win over the Giants.

Penny (3-0) gave up eight hits over 7 2-3 innings while outpitching former teammate Matt Cain. Penny, who played for San Francisco in 2009, didn't allow a runner past second base while lowering his ERA to 0.94.

Pablo Sandoval and Andres Torres had three hits apiece for the Giants, who were shut out for the second time in five games. Pujols hit a hanging slider from Cain (0-1) into the left-field stands in the first inning.

In other National league action, it was: Nationals 1, Dodgers 0; Cubs 12, Brewers 2; Rockies 8, Marlins 4; Diamondbacks 8, Phillies 6; Astros 10, Pirates 3; Mets 1, Braves 0, 6 innings.

In St Petersburg, Florida, David Price threw a four-hitter for his first complete game, while John Jaso and Jason Bartlett had two RBIs apiece as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-0.

Price (3-1) struck out nine and walked one. He improved to 9-1 in his career against the AL East.

Carlos Pena opened the fifth by drawing Tampa Bay's sixth walk off Brandon Morrow (1-2) and then went to third when B J Upton got the Rays first hit, a double to right. After Pat Burrell struck out, Jaso hit a two-run single.

In other American League action, it was: Angels 8, Yankees 4; White Sox 3, Mariners 2; Royals 4, Twins 3; Orioles 7, Red Sox 6, 10 innings; Rangers 8, Tigers 4; and Athletics 11, Indians 0.
