Sandoval, Cabrera lead NL romp

MELKY Cabrera blasted a two-run home run and Pablo Sandoval smacked a three-run triple to power the National League past the American League 8-0 on Tuesday in the 83rd Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
National League batters tagged American League starting pitcher Justin Verlander for five runs and Cabrera, named the game's Most Valuable Player, added a two-run homer in the fourth inning to secure the triumph.
It was the third victory in a row for the National League over the American League, which had a 13-game All-Star win streak snapped in 2010, and gave the eventual NL champion a home-field edge in October's World Series final.
Detroit right-hander Verlander, making his first All-Star start, surrendered five runs on four hits and two walks in the first inning.
Cabrera scored the first run, hitting a single and scoring on a Ryan Braun double. Sandoval added a bases-loaded triple later in the inning and scored on an infield hit by Dan Uggla to give the National League a 5-0 advantage.
Not since San Francisco's Atlee Hammaker in 1983 had a pitcher given up five or more earned runs in a single inning in an All-Star Game. The outburst also matched the most runs scored in an inning by any NL team in All-Star history.
San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain pitched two scoreless innings to open the game to collect the victory while Verlander took the loss.
"That was a thrilling two innings," Cain said.
Matt Holliday hit a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and Cabrera followed with a homer to produce the final runs.
Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers did not take the mound for the American League. Washington's Bryce Harper became the youngest non-pitcher in All-Star Game history at age 19 when he served as a pinch-hitter for the National League and was walked.
