Suzuki ties Cobb for hits
Japan鈥檚 Ichiro Suzuki has matched one iconic Major League Baseball hitter and is taking aim at another as he chases a historic milestone 鈥 his 3,000th hit in North America.
Suzuki smacked a fifth-inning single for the Miami Marlins in a 1-3 loss Friday to the St Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium that gave him 2,913 career hits in MLB, but more importantly 4,191 hits in his North American and Japan League careers combined. That total matches the career total of US legend Ty Cobb, a Hall of Famer from a century ago who ranks second on the all-time major league career hit list to Pete Rose. The 41-year-old Suzuki, who arrived from Japan in 2001 with 1,278 career hits for the Orix Blue Wave when he joined the Seattle Mariners, is only 65 hits shy of equaling Rose, although the feat would not be recognized by MLB as a record should he pass Rose since the total was divided over two leagues on two continents.
