Tigers beat Yanks to surge ahead

DETROIT took a 2-0 lead in its American League championship series with New York as pitcher Anibal Sanchez shut down a Yankees lineup lacking Derek Jeter to help the Tigers to a 3-0 win on Sunday.

In the National League championship series later at San Francisco, Carlos Beltran and David Freese hit two-run homers as the wildcard St. Louis Cardinals beat the Giants 6-4 in Game 1.

The Tigers scored twice in the eighth inning after a pivotal missed call by second base umpire Jeff Nelson.

Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda did not allow a hit into the sixth inning, but the slumping New York hitters looked lost a day after their captain Jeter broke his ankle in the 12th inning of a 4-6 loss.

Making his second postseason start, Sanchez allowed just three hits deep into the game.

Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is tonight in Detroit, with reigning AL Most Valuable Player Justin Verlander starting for the Tigers. Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected on his 48th birthday after arguing the missed call by Nelson.

Nelson admitted he blew the call on second baseman Robinson Cano's tag, which should have ended the eighth inning before Detroit expanded its lead from one run to three.

The defending World Series champion Cardinals took an early 6-0 lead and held on just two nights after coming back from a 0-6 deficit to beat Washington in the deciding game of their division series.

The St. Louis bullpen delivered with 5 1-3 scoreless innings after starter Lance Lynn was chased for hits. Edward Mujica, the fifth St. Louis pitcher, struck out the side in order in the seventh for the win. Jason Motte finished for his second save of the postseason.

The Cardinals gave first-year manager Mike Matheny a win against his former club.

Matheny's crew hardly looked road weary after a cross-country trip. The Giants dropped to 0-3 at home so far during these playoffs, outscored 20-6 at AT&T Park.

This is the first time the previous two World Series winners are facing off in the postseason since the 1958 World Series between the Braves and Yankees.
