Tigers win as Verlander silences Indians
Detroit ace Justin Verlander put in a dominant performance as the Tigers pushed their winning streak into double figures by beating nearest rival Cleveland 5-1 on Tuesday, opening a five-game lead on the Indians in the American League Central division.
Detroit’s Verlander (12-8) allowed one run in eight innings as the Tigers beat the Indians for the 10th time in 11 games.
Don Kelly hit a three-run homer for the Tigers in the fifth inning off Justin Masterson (13-8) and Miguel Cabrera picked up his 100th RBI of the season.
Atlanta extended a winning run by beating Washington 2-1 in a bad-tempered affair and notching a 12th straight victory.
The game saw benches and dugouts empty in anticipation of a brawl when the Nationals’ Bryce Harper was hit by a Julio Teheran pitch, but no punches were thrown.
Evan Gattis’ two-run single in the fifth inning and the six innings thrown by Teheran (9-5) while allowing one run combined to push the Braves 14½ games clear of Washington in the National League East.

Reds starter Mat Latos (11-3) pitched 7 1-3 scoreless innings, and has taken his past three decisions.
It was a welcome turnaround for the Cincinnati pitchers after giving up 28 runs in two games.
Arizona’s Cody Ross homered and Wade Miley pitched impressively to help the Diamondbacks beat Tampa Bay.
