THE Boston Red Sox fired manager Bobby Valentine on Thursday after just one season, having failed to bring order to a team that disintegrated during the 2011 pennant race. The brash and supremely confident manager was dismissed the day after the finale of a season beset with internal sniping and far too many losses. Valentine went 69-93 in Boston, the club's worst season in almost 50 years.
