Video review makes debut as Pirates beat Cubs
NEIL Walker blasted a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates opened their Major League Baseball season with a 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday.
Walker hit a 3-2 pitch from Cubs pitcher Carlos Villanueva into the outfield bleachers. “This one feels pretty special. A special day for the team, for the organization,” said Walker. “Just an amazing day.”
The Cubs-Pirates contest was one of 13 games on the slate Monday, including the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 win over the reigning World Series champion Boston Red Sox.
Walker’s homer made a winner of Pirates pitcher Bryan Morris, who worked around a one-out single in the top of the 10th with a pickoff that was overturned in Pittsburgh’s favour on a replay challenge.
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle asked for a review after Emilio Bonifacio was called safe on a pickoff attempt. The umpires conferred with video officials in New York and reversed the call.
“It’s funny,” Morris said. “My first Major League pickoff, and it came with a review. I’ll take it.”
It was the second video challenge of the contest. The first use of replay in MLB took place in the fifth inning, when the Cubs put together the first threat of the game.
Nate Schierholtz led off with a single and Darwin Barney walked. Jeff Samardzija tried to bunt the runners over, but Francisco Liriano fielded the ball in front of the mound, threw to third for the first out and Pedro Alvarez fired back to first for the double play.
Cubs manager Rick Renteria motioned to first base umpire Bob Davidson to question the close call and then decided he wanted to challenge it.
The review, which took about two minutes, upheld Davidson’s decision.
