White Sox grab Toronto win
MARK Teahen smashed a ninth-inning homer and drove in the winning run in the 11th to give the Chicago White Sox an 8-7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
With Chicago down by a run in the ninth, Teahen belted a solo homer off reliever Jason Frasor over the left field fence to tie the score, then followed with a triple in the 11th that brought home Omar Vizquel.
The win over the Blue Jays (5-2), who were playing their home opener, was Chicago's (3-4) first in Toronto since June 1, 2007 - a stretch of 10 games.
"I just told myself to be loose up there because I feel like I've been so tense the first week of the season," Teahen told reporters after breaking out of a 1-for-15 slump.
Bobby Jenks pitched the bottom of the 11th and got the save for the White Sox despite walking two batters.
The Blue Jays fell behind early but John Buck hit a two-run home run in the second to tie the game. After Chicago put two more runs on the board in the third, Toronto replied with four of its own, Vernon Wells' homer giving the Blue Jays a 6-4 lead.
Chicago tied the game with two runs in the sixth, Andruw Jones smacking his second home run of the game, having also hit one in the second inning.
"The last two years were terrible years," Jones said of his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers. "I just want to have fun and do it for myself and my family because they know I can still play the game."
Adam Lind drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to put the Blue Jays up 7-6 before Teahen stepped up to deliver the game-tying homer and winning RBI.
White Sox starter Jake Peavy was chased in the sixth after allowing seven runs.
Drafted
White Sox outfielder Alex Rios went 3-for-5 against his former team. Rios was drafted by the Blue Jays in 1999 but was released by the team last August.
In Minneapolis, after nearly three decades inside the Metrodome, the Twins moved outdoors and beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2, thanks to hometown star Joe Mauer in the first regular-season game at their new Target Field ballpark.
Elsewhere in American League, it was: Rays 5, Orioles 1; Athletics 4, Mariners 0; Rangers 4, Indians 2, 10 innings; and Royals 10, Tigers 5.
In St Louis, Albert Pujols homered and drove in four runs to lead Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals over winless Houston 5-0 in their home opener.
New batting coach Mark McGwire drew one of the biggest cheers during the pregame introductions before his first home game since retiring after the 2001 season.
Also, it was: Padres 17, Braves 2; Giants 9, Pirates 3; Reds 6, Marlins 5, 10 innings; Phillies 7, Nationals 4; and Cubs 9, Brewers 5.
