Yankees earn AL East division title
THE New York Yankees claimed the American League East title and the Oakland Athletics edged the Texas Rangers for the AL West crown on a tense final day of baseball's regular season on Wednesday.
The Yankees won the East when the Baltimore Orioles, who needed to win, lost 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays. New York, with the pressure off, celebrated in style with a 14-2 thumping of arch rivals the Boston Red Sox.
"Now the real season starts," the Yankees' Derek Jeter said.
Oakland came from behind to beat Texas 12-5, moving straight into the divisional series while the Rangers - which had led the AL West comfortably for so long - were thrust into a one-off wild-card game against the Orioles.
In the National League, the playoff positions had already been determined, but the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 to earn home-field advantage all the way through the playoffs, including the World Series.
The playoffs begin today with a pair of winner-take-all wild-card matchups.
The defending World Series champion St Louis Cardinals visit the Atlanta Braves in the NL, in what could be the final game for Braves great Chipper Jones. The winner of that game will go into a best-of-five divisional series against Washington.
The AL wild-card clash will see Baltimore visit Texas, with the winner to square off against the Yankees in the division series.
Tomorrow, the newly crowned AL West champion Oakland Athletics will visit the Detroit Tigers in the opener of their division series.
