Yankees magic number at one after Boston win

THE New York Yankees held off the Boston Red Sox and moved closer to clinching a playoff berth with a pulsating 4-3 victory in 10 innings on Sunday.

Robinson Cano delivered a game-tying RBI single in the ninth to force extra innings before little-used Juan Miranda forced a bases-loaded walk to bring in the game-winning run for the Yankees, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

New York (93-63) moved within one win of clinching its 15th post-season spot in 16 years.

"It's a lot better feeling in that clubhouse tonight than it has been lately, that's for sure," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters.

"This is a huge win. We've been scuffling. We've lost some leads late in games. I think I'll sleep once we get to (our next series in) Toronto."

The Red Sox (86-69) were trying to improve their slim playoff hopes and scored two runs against Mariano Rivera in the ninth to take a 3-2 lead. But Jonathan Papelbon blew a save opportunity to spoil a fine outing from Japanese starter Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Boston fell 6.5 games behind the Yankees who lead the AL Wildcard race and sit a half-game from the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.

Alex Rodriguez sparked the home team in the seventh inning with a two-run blast, his 29th of the season, to put New York up 2-1.

The Red Sox rallied against recently vulnerable Rivera in the ninth behind a game-tying RBI single from Bill Hall then a go-ahead sacrifice-fly by Mike Lowell. Ryan Kalish set up the rally by stealing second and third base before scoring the tying run while Hall also stole two bases to come in for the go-ahead score.

Hideki Okajima pitched the 10th for Boston, surrendering two walks and two hits in just one-third of an inning to take the loss.

In other action, it was: Mariners 6, Rays 2; Rangers 16, Athletics 9; Tigers 5, Twins 1; Blue Jays 5, Orioles 2; White Sox 4, Angels 3; and Indians 5, Royals 3.

In the National League, Matt Cain didn't allow a hit into the eighth inning, pitching the San Francisco Giants past the fading Colorado Rockies 4-2 and back into first place in the West.

Also, it was: Reds 12, Padres 2; Mets 7, Phillies 3; Nationals 4, Braves 2; Cardinals 8, Cubs 7; Pirates 9, Astros 3; Brewers 7, Marlins 1; and Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 4.
