Yi, Wang named in Chinese squad

CHINA yesterday announced a young side without Yao Ming to compete at the basketball world championship in Turkey.

Washington Wizards forward Yi Jianlian and former NBA player Wang Zhizhi will lead the team. About half of the 12-member squad have been named in the national team for the first time. Yi, Wang, guards Wang Shipeng, Liu Wei and Sun Yue are the only players who participated at the 2006 World Championships in Japan. New faces like Su Wei, Zhou Peng, Jin Lipeng, Yu Shulong emerged from the domestic CBA league while Guo Ailun was drafted from the youth team and Zhang Zhaoxu from UC Berkeley. China will face the 2006 runner-up Greece in its opener on Saturday. Ivory Coast, Puerto Rico, Russia, and Turkey are also in China's group.
