Arenas watches as Sharks flop again
GILBERT Arenas could only watch from the bench as his team, the Shanghai Sharks, slipped to their fourth straight defeat in a Chinese Basketball Association league match yesterday.
Arenas, wearing a red sweater, hasn't seen much of action since injuring himself in the season opener in Beijing last month. The former NBA All-Star guard sat out of the game again despite the crowds expectations of his return.
Since his injury, the Sharks' fortune have nose-dived - a dismal 2-7 start to their season.
Shanghai captain Liu Wei attempted a wild 3-pointer shot at the buzzer and missed as the Sharks went down 94-97 in front of their home fans to Zhejiang Chouzhou club yesterday.
Four Jiangsu players got into double figures with their American import Quincy Douby notching a game-high 23 points and four steals.
Liu led the Sharks with 20 points and five assists.
Shanghai trailed in the third 66-73 but came back strongly at the start of the fourth quarter.
Shanghai's Wang Ligang and D.J. White grabbed two three-pointers in the last 15 seconds, helping to narrow the difference to two points.
Jiangsu's one missed free-throw gave Shanghai some hope but captain Liu's audacious three-pointer could only make it to the rim of the basket.
In other CBA games yesterday, the defending champion Beijing Ducks lost 117-121 to Shanxi Fenjiu club in overtime.
Also, Tracy McGrady's Qingdao Doublestar is still without a win after they were beaten by Shandong Gold 91-102.
